5. Kamchatka, Russia, 1952 – magnitude 9.0
Despite the magnitude and being on the list of the biggest earthquakes in the world, the tremor had no record of victims because it is in a less inhabited area in Russia. Even so, the shock was felt even in Hawaii and the damage is estimated at US$ 1 million.
4. Sendai, Japão, 2011 – magnitude 9.1
The earthquake took place at a point at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, 130 kilometers from Sendai, accompanied by a giant wave that devastated much of the Japanese east coast. The force of the wave led to a nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant, 260 kilometers from Tokyo. The nuclear disaster is considered the largest after the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Official data account for more than 15,000 deaths.
3. Sumatra, Indonésia, 2004 – magnitude 9.1
The largest earthquake in terms of number of victims, the tremor in Indonesia left 227,900 dead, and 1.7 million homeless in 14 countries in South Asia and East Africa. The tsunami that followed the earthquake hit a vast portion of Asian island lands, causing most of the deaths. After the disaster, several safety protocols were adopted.
2. Alaska, Estados Unidos, 1964 – magnitude 9.2
As it was in a less populated area than the earthquake in Chile, the tremor, which occurred in Alaska, lasted 3 minutes and left 128 dead, and was also felt in parts of Canada. Structural damage costs were estimated at $311 million. A tsunami caused by the earthquake caused damage even in Hawaii.
